Jim Brown in powerful writing in the On Probation Blog has
commented under his post entitled, “TR in Trouble” that the TR ominshambles is
going pair shaped, which is illustrated appropriately in the above picture methinks.
So many others are now recognising the Minister Chris
Graylings Transforming Rehabilitation is beginning to look like the prediction
of weeks ago, that it is all a slow moving train crash waiting to happen.
The Howard League for penal reform says G4S + Serco fiasco must be
death-knell for Goverments dangerous gamble with justice privatisation:
“Responding to the
Justice Secretary’s written ministerial statement regarding Ministry of Justice
contracts, Frances Crook, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal
Reform, said:
“The withdrawal of G4S
and Serco as prime contractors from the Transforming Rehabilitation programme
is welcome news for the taxpayer, given these firms’ exceptionally concerning
record running justice services.
“Given the abject
failure of the Ministry of Justice to look after taxpayers’ money when managing
contracts, this must surely be the death-knell for the government’s dangerous
gamble with justice privatisation. “
“The Coalition’s plan
to sell off probation has succeeded only in destabilising the public probation
service, which has served the public well for more than 100 years. We hope that
at the eleventh hour, this excellent service can now be saved.”
Another writer says about yesterdays MoJ announcement of there
only being 30 bidders past the first stage of the sell off, says of those
bidders that “ most of them currently only exist on paper. Without the reluctant
mutuals and the handful that are only really sub-prime material, the number of
bidders is pretty much in single figures. It's certainly not a credible
'market'.
Suzanne Thompson, a manager of an Employment, Training,
Education team says, "This is just a first stage-many potential
primes likely to pull out once they fully understand the risks & no money
in it!"
Professor Paul Senior says A rich evidence base which
concludes that TR is too risky, dangerous and should be abandoned.
Now Minister Chris Grayling's TR plans are raising more and more
concerns from fellow MP’s, even more so after the leaking of a secret private report was
brought to the publics attention in both the Mirror and the Guardian last
weekend, that there would be a HIGHER RISK TO THE PUBLIC if the privatisation
of Probation continues.
MP John Healey says that the Justice Secretary is almost entirely without
allies or evidence for his probation privatisation; minister tells me, in
effect, 'do I care'?
MP John McDonnell, Even though Serco & G4S been referred
to Serious Fraud Office Grayling lets them play role in privatising probation.
MP Sarah Champion says the he Tories are attacking
ever aspect of the public services & seeking to privatise - creeping
erosion of public sphere. Terrifying!"
MP Sadiq Khan tells us that Ministers dismiss during Justice Question with serious
concerns probation & prisons inspectors have with Govt probation
privatisation plans."
Harry Fletcher, the campaigner, media worker and parliamentary inquiry advisor says, " Plans
for probation now on agenda of weekly LIBDEM internal party meetings. Real concerns being expressed!
Indeed, MP Chris Grayling's Transforming Rehabilitation looks very much like going pear shaped. These
half baked plans which are rotten are going pear shaped and MP's and the experts have serious concerns about public safety. The very fact of this is illustrated by
Minister Chris Graylings insistence on still using
G4S and Serco to support those plans. One writer says it all when he says, “It beggars belief that the MoJ will still allow multi-million £ overchargers Serco and G4S to be involved in TR http://t.co/wo7HolqTpm
TR looking pear-shaped and a bit rotten! Don't swallow the mess, but better the advice of Harry Fletcher keep campaigning against TR omnishambles.
