For The Probation Service The Time Is Now

There is the saying that a picture paints a thousand words and Martin Shovel says so much with the use of 7 words. I was reflecting on this picture which is so relevant for so many public services workers. It reminds me of the arrogance of big business, the stupidity of a small state, and the privatisation of the people's assets. The picture touches my world in probation me and my colleagues come under the axe of this Coalition Government.

I like pictures, and this one from Creativity Works is a favourite. The Privatisation of the Public Services or Transforming Rehabilitation in regards to Probation Trusts is all about: the loss of our assets (welfare); big business profit and greed; inevitable public bail out; and the Governments stupidity!

Transforming Rehabilitaiton & Selling Welfare

Since moving on from the poverty of the Victorian times our nation has put in place welfare for those who are not part of the privileged few. However, now the privileged few are all about selling off those things that are now part of society’s rich inheritance to the cheapest bidder. The Court Service, Prison Service, Health Service and the Probation Service.

Barrister Sam Parham points out in regards to criminal justice: "The Probation sell-off is a disaster, private prisons are in disarray, barristers walk out of courts".

The Governments policies on demolishing welfare and criminal justice is a disaster in the making, and a taking away welfare gains for the majority, so that the privileged few can benefit and keep any profit made!

Transforming Rehabilitation & Profit

The Government are aiming to save money by selling off the Probation Service and giving the shares to their friends in private companies, but any money saved, or made, will go to rich business men and shareholders, who include many attached to the Tory Party.

Criminologist expert, Fergus McNeill concludes in an article regarding "Transforming Rehabilitation""Rehabilitation is best thought of as being everyone’s concern and no-one’s business"

Transforming Rehabilitation & The Bail Out

Who bailed the banks out? The same people who will have to bail out the inevitable crash of Transforming Rehabilitation, and how much will that cost the tax-payers? Already the Government are having problems with their transforming timetable that was easier to plan in theory, than it is to put into actual practise.

Union Members from Warwickshire point out out that the "Termination of Probation Trusts are delayed due to serious unresolved risk concerns".

Campainer and advisor Harry Fletcher points out that, "Transforming Rehabilitation  is now 4 months behind the timetable set in the leaked risk register last June. Many more problems face MoJ agenda soon".

Professor Paul Senior says, "MoJ plans to close probation trusts delayed by months and they live on to end May.  This is the drip drip of impending failure".

Union Leader, Ian Lawrence says, "Oh what a complete shambles this Rehabilitation Revolution actually is.

In response to the governments crumbling timetable Rotherham MP Sarah Champion says, " We need to keep pressure on to turn this into a U-turn!"

And Employment Manager Suzanne Thompson agreeing with the  On Probation Blog says in regards to Transforming Rehabilitation, "The way we have all been treated by NOMS & MP Grayling gives me no confidence in how NPS or CRCs will be run"

Transforming Rehabilitation & Stupidity

Fat Cats and large corporations must be laughing all the way to the bank, at their achievement of having the current government in the palms of their hands.  Many ordinary people nip down to the cash machine, while Fat Cats and large corporations just nip on down to the government as one big cash machine, while justice, health and welfare systems are being demolished.

Now in my opinion the Government hasn't got a lot going for it - but as somebody once said, "you can't fix stupidity, but you can vote it out", and the very exciting news as MP Chris Williamson points out is, "400+ days & counting until day the British people can vote for a fairer society & end this odious".

Sooner or later the majority of our nation, are going to have to take on the privileged few.

For the Probation Service the time is now, or by the 1st June we will be no more!

Harry Fletcher reminds us that the fight is ongoing in the House of Lords, "Briefing for House of Lords next week outlines 27 flaws, faults and problems for Transforming Rehabilitation. It will highlight risks and dangers. Very positive comments from Lords ...on campaign for pilot , debate and votes prior to any restructuring of Probation".

We all have a voice that can make a ripple, and a ripple can make a wave, and a wave can become a tsunami of public opinion and action.

Last week Sheffield NAPO union members voted 20 to 1 against accepting a 1% pay rise. The 1 person who accepted the offer, said that 1% was the best deal that we would get from this government, which is probably true!

For our communities and our nation it is better that the Probation Service makes Waves, rather than goes out with a whimper!

  1. Thank you David and all those other Bloggers seeking to defend the pedigree of our heritage and the richness, value and diversity of ALL our STAFF. I recall during my Twitter Journey reflecting on the 1990's about some Academics suggesting Probation was moving away from its Traditions, values and roots that had underpinned its sense of Duty and Public Service. Well daily I'm PROUD to work alongside Dedicated Staff that despite the omi-shambles and debacle of what's happening they remain resolute in there resolve to Protect the Public and do there very best. Far from losing those traditions and values they are manifesting them in the very substance of our physical demise. There is still strength in Probations bearing heart and as Nelson Mandela said there no time to wait around we must prepare to climb the next HILL with passion, integrity and hope
