Pinocchio - Post by Joe Kuipers


The Adventures of Pinocchio is a story about an animated marionette, boys who turn into donkeys and other fairy tale devices, by Collodi and serialised in 1881–2, and then published in 1883 with huge success. In the original, serialised version, Pinocchio dies a gruesome death: hanged for his innumerable faults (one of which was difficulty in telling the truth). At the request of his editor, Collodi added chapters in which the Fairy with Turquoise Hair rescues Pinocchio and eventually transforms him into a real boy, when he acquires a deeper understanding of himself.

We move into a significant week with a Parliamentary debate tomorrow, hopefully opened up to look at the wider issues facing probation rather than just addressing the supervision arrangements for those released after serving under 12 months. Serious questions have been posed by Liz Calderbank about the future arrangements focusing especially on unclear accountability mechanisms, now that she has retired from being HM Chief Inspector of Probation - I wish her well for the future. Jim Brown posted an open letter to MPs today. There will undoubtedly be a meeting of the NOMS TR Assurance Board this week to consider if it is safe to terminate the contracts with Trusts, which must be issued by 21 January if the April deadlines are to be met......
