Probation SPO set to swim two miles for charity to help fight against polio: http://t.co/nADKYjBlG8 and celebrate Probations Heritage

Ian Gould, a Senior Probation officer at Sandwell, is celebrating 107 years of probation’s heritage and internationally recognised ‘excellent’ public service by swimming 107 lengths at Langley swimming baths, in mid March (date TBC).

A polio survivor, Ian is swimming the 30 metre pool to raise money for the End Polio Now charity, which aims to eradicate polio worldwide. www.endpolio.org

Ian said: “In 1876, Frederic Rayner was so concerned about problems associated with chronic alcoholism, that he sent a gift of five shillings to a charity. The charity was the precursor to the probation service, a service I have loved and served for over 30 years.

“Whilst celebrating probation’s existence during uncertain and ever changing times, I also want to make a tangible contribution to ‘Stop Polio Now’, a charity supported by both Rotary International and the Bill Gates Foundation for the Eradication of Polio Worldwide.”

Ian’s target is £1000 and donations can be made securely online at:

Ian has recently asked a number of MPs about the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms and has asked the Government to support his endeavours, to ensure that no children have to suffer from this curable disease.
